#UIDesign #DesignStystems #Grids
- We grouped each chunk of a Yammer thread the same way our developers were grouping them in the code. To help out our eyes, we assigned each one its own color. At this point we also started referring to the chunks as modules, because we fancy.
- We stopped defining margins between modules. Instead, all the spacing in the app would come from padding within the modules — specifically, top padding. Bottom padding would have worked, too; just not both. The key is to choose one of the two and stick with it. This kept things simpler when we did need to define top and bottom margins in some special cases.
- We threw all of the individual modules into one super long artboard. It looks pretty weird, because this is not a conversation that would ever actually exist in Yammer. It’s okay, though. All we need it for is checking alignment on our grid and making sure every type of element is accounted for.
- When everything was laid out vertically, we still had three specific combinations that were throwing things off. This was okay with us — three was much easier to deal with than hundreds. Our engineers went to work defining special “if…” statements for each of them.

#DesignSystems #Components #DesignTokens
Design tokens are the visual design atoms of the design system — specifically, they are named entities that store visual design attributes. We use them in place of hard-coded values (such as hex values for color or pixel values for spacing) in order to maintain a scalable and consistent visual system for UI development.

#CSS #WenDevelopment
Complex websites have very large amounts of CSS, often with a lot of repeated values. For example, the same colour might be used in hundreds of different places, requiring global search and replace if that colour needs to change. CSS variables allow a value to be stored in one place, then referenced in multiple other places. An additional benefit is semantic identifiers. For example --main-text-color is easier to understand than #00ff00, especially if this same color is also used in another context.

#Rails #Dev #Amazon #Cloudfront #S3 #performance
A common trick I use with client work to speed up asset delivery is use cloudfront as an asset host. I'm surprised this technique isn't in more widespread use as it reliably makes for snappier user experiences, especially users with a fresh cache. This guide assumes you're using the Rails asset pipeline to package and serve your assets. If you're not using the asset pipeline, whatever solution you use to achieve the same result will need to fingerprint asset filenames with some sort of unique identifier for it to work smoothly with Cloudfront or a CDN like it.

#Sketch #Anima #Zeplin #Workaround
The plugin changes the way Sketch renders layers on runtime, and since SketchTool does not load plugins, it just renders layers how Sketch itself would do if AutoLayout wasn't installed.
There's a workaround in AutoLayout (find the 'Prepare for Export' menu option) that basically flattens the render and copies the content to a new document.
